It’s all about sex

I caught your attention, didn’t I? Cheap publicity. And of course not even true. But it doesn’t matter that out of Khajuraho’s thousands of carved figures, 90% are not erotic (according to the leaflets), who cares about this….

when there is THIS….

This is how the temples shot to fame.

Dating back almost a thousand years, and cleared from the grasp of the jungle, most of the carvings depict scenes of war, everyday activities like personal grooming, playing music, and playing with children, gods, goddesses and their extended families, mythical animals, plenty of dragons, lions and elephants, and nonfigurative patterns….

The details are striking, the figures jump right off the walls and almost start dancing, writhing, marching, laughing.

And when the late afternoon light hits them, even the colours change.

There is such a deep understanding of the human body, its movement, shapes, curves and dimensions. Even the non-erotic scenes have some kind of magic around them, the celebration of the carnal, birth, rebirth, creation, life to the fullest.

I haven’t really heard a convincing explanation for such a detailed depiction of sexual acts and even perversions, though there is no shortage of theories, ranging from appeasing the gods to teaching the general populace a thing or two.

Some of them are gentle, some are hilarious, but in most of them, I see such beauty and sensuality, completely missing from any sort of modern erotic crap I’ve seen.

Call me crazy, but I think that elephant is laughing at the couple!

IMG_1226

Some are quite tiny and hidden, in fact.

I don’t know if male visitors are walking around with hard-ons, or what, but there were several creeps and even the odd security guard around who enjoyed pointing out the most scandalous poses and depictions. It’s low season, and I didn’t see any other westerners around today, I know of a group who went in the morning….. I didn’t enjoy being at the butt end…. (khm) of their jokes and I ended up having to be quite rude….

IMG_1501

I wonder though if the local youths and couples joke around, or the guys perhaps show off, trying to imitate the headstand pose?!

IMG_1391

IMG_1312

And it’s an enviable job, scrubbing the details clean.

IMG_1389

The local monkeys are great connoisseurs of fine arts….

IMG_1429

Inside details… the light only shines in during the morning. Each temple is dedicated to a different deity.

IMG_1399

It is said that secret wishes whispered into the bull’s ear will be conveyed to Shiva the destroyer / recreator. Usually I try these little quirky things, but that god, I don’t want to have anything to do with him if possible, he’s too fearsome.

IMG_1413

By the way, the gods and goddesses have the distinct advantage of multiple hands for lovemaking, besides of course having to carry their insignia (there is a handy hand subtly fondling the breast).

IMG_1387

In total, there are more than five thousand individual figures….

IMG_1295

All in all…. even if no sex, the detail and finesse of the carvings would still make this an amazing place to visit…. this is just the cherry on the cake 🙂

    1. sandstone. it’s a unique place, other temples from the same era didn’t survive the Mughal (Muslim) invaders. this place escaped because it was so middle of nowhere.
